But with fans of the soap on the edge of their seats, Cain suddenly appeared and dragged Joe out of the way.
The pair ended up on the floor, with Joe shouting at Caleb as he jumped to his feet: “You could have killed me!”
Furious that Cain had got in the way, Caleb shot back: “That was the point!”
The dramatic scenes played out in the latest episode of Emmerdale, which aired on Friday evening.
Caleb’s plot to kill Joe came after he worked out that he had stolen his kidney in an elaborate organ harvesting plot.
The scheming businessman was left in dire need of a transplant after being diagnosed with kidney disease, so decided to do things on the sly with the help of a corrupt private doctor.
Caleb, his biological uncle, was enlisted as the target.
This week, Caleb pieced together the truth and launched a violent attack on Joe.
And with Joe threatening to tell the police Caleb and Ruby were responsible for Ashley’s death, Caleb asked Cain to help him finish Joe off.
Caleb asked Cain in Friday’s show: “Did you get my voicemail?”

Cain replied: “Yes, and? I’m not killing him and neither are you.
“He’s not going to say anything, he’s got too much to lose just like you.”
Caleb repeatedly asked Cain if he trusted Joe, to which he eventually admitted he didn’t.
“He could tear our family apart like that but if he’s out the way, problem solved,” Caleb said.
Later, after dragging Joe out of the path of Caleb’s car, Cain shouted at his brother: “You’re a joke, do you know that?!
“If I hadn’t have stopped you, you’d be inside. And then where would Ruby and Steph be now?”
Unfortunately, Caleb’s failed attempt to kill Joe has only made things worse to him and his family.
In a cliffhanger, Joe later reappeared and threatened Caleb and Ruby.
“We have started something and we do have to finish it,” Joe warned.
Caleb told him: “Oh I’m ready.”
But threateningly, Joe replied: “You’ll never be ready.”
