EastEnders has confirmed the survival of one key character following a forthcoming car tragedy that will leave a huge question mark hanging over the lives of other Walford favourites.

In scenes to air this week, events reach a crescendo for the extended Mitchell clan as Nicola’s (Laura Doddington) web of lies finally catches up with her.

Fans of the BBC soap will see Harry Mitchell (Elijah Holloway) take drastic action against Zack Hudson (James Farrar) after learning that Zack is his brother Barney’s (Lewis Bridgeman) real father and is plotting to flee Albert Square with the teen.

In a frantic bid to stop Zack, Harry bundles him into his car boot before speeding off into the night.

Harry’s dad Teddy Mitchell (Roland Manookian), who – still reeling from the revelation that Barney is not actually his son – begs his brother Billy Mitchell and his wife Honey Mitchell (Perry Fenwick and Emma Barton) to forgo their trip to the cinema with Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley) and chase after Harry so Teddy can stop him from going too far.

Nicola chats to Harvey at the market in EastEnders

But tragedy soon strikes when a car veers off the road and plunges into a lake, with not all passengers guaranteed to make it out alive…

One character who will live to tell the tale, however, is Nicola.

While her involvement in the car crash has not yet been confirmed, spoilers for next week’s episodes have revealed that she will become wrapped up in an altogether different storyline, as Harvey Monroe (Ross Boatman) continues to deal with the fallout of his affair with Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth).

He is deflated when his idea for a new business hits the buffers after reaching the ears of a vengeful Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace), who is still furious about how he treated his former partner Jean Slater (Gillian Wright).

After Kat sabotages his venture, Harvey receives some unlikely advice from none other than Nicola.

Given it doesn’t sound like Nicola is in mourning, could this also indicate that the other Mitchells make it out of the lake alive? And does this mean poor Zack might have met a watery grave?
