Emmerdale’s John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) has been making frequent trips to the hospital to visit a coma patient, leaving viewers wondering just who the mystery person is.
From the moment he first set foot in the village, it was clear that John was something of an enigma.
Far from an open book, getting information out of him about his life was akin to getting blood from a stone, but long-lost sister Victoria Sugden (Isabel Hodgins) persisted, determined to get to know her ‘new’ sibling.
John eventually opened up, albeit at a glacial pace, filling Vic in on his life in the army, and it didn’t take long for him to fall for Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller).
Much like viewers suspected, however, John is still harbouring a number of secrets, with scenes on the ITV soap last week having confirmed that he was to blame for Nate Robinson’s (Jurell Carter) demise.
The relative newbie appears to have a hero complex, whereby he orchestrates situations where people’s lives are on the line in order to play the saviour. With Nate, he failed to act in time after endangering his life, which ultimately led to the farm-hand’s death.
Having also been responsible for Chas’ (Lucy Pargeter) spiking and setting up Ella Forster (Paula Lane) – not to mention his secrecy surrounding the whereabouts of Anthony Fox’s (Nicholas Day) body – we’ve only just scratched the surface with John and his secrets.
Which brings us right back around to the mysterious coma victim that he keeps visiting at Hotten General. Just who is he? That is the question but luckily it’s one Metro has the answers to.
Who is John visiting in the hospital bed in Emmerdale?
The person John is visiting is none other than Aidan Moore – the very same Aidan Moore that John previously claimed was dead.
When Victoria stumbled upon a dog tag among her brother’s things, John revealed that Aidan was a friend from his time in the army. They were supposedly best mates and served together in Afghanistan.

At the time, John claimed the story ended in tragedy, with Aidan killed when a bomb went off during a kickabout with a young recruit.
‘I tried my best to save him,’ he said. ‘I told him I could but I was lying, I had to. I could see the fear in his eyes. I held his hand as he slowly slipped away.’
‘Aidan thought I could save him and I let him down. I can never forgive myself for that.’

But with Aidan still alive and in a coma, it appears there is much more to this story than meets the eye.
In Thursday’s (April 17) episode, John tells Aidan that he’s met someone in Aaron, who loves him wholeheartedly. ‘That wasn’t your style was it?’, he says to Aidan, which seemingly confirms they were former lovers. ‘You never let me forget I was second best.’
John says that such a thing ‘messed’ with his head and tells Aidan that he won’t be visiting him again.
With so much new information now about Aidan, the question is: is any of John’s initial version of events true? Or knowing what we know about what he’s capable of, did John have a hand in Aidan’s hospitalisation?
